Glad I worked nearly everyday this summer. I have not been getting enough work this year teaching. It's been a slow start and a lot slower than previous years. Doesn't help that today is a snow-day and my job was cancelled. As much as I am disliking parts of my serving job it's really helping financially. Along with what I was able to save from this summer.
Updates there. I have added an additional $1000 to my EF. I thought living on my own I should increase it just in case. So it's at $2500, it's actually at $3000 but I am giving myself some leeway to go a bit above and below.
My serving job made me really upset on Saturday. I had a pretty good day, people were nice. Although I did get one no-tip. When a person does not tip. That means I OWE the kitchen, plus I'm already making under provincial minimum wage so it kind of sucks. Anyway overall that day I was doing alright. Then I get a group of 15....15 fifteen year olds. All worked out they all wanted separate bills which takes forever to process. Kids are leaving as I am processing payments. I assume they left money on the table. Most did....two did not. One was just a pop, and $2, the other was a big order and $37. They just left. I didn't know what to do in this situation and asked my manager. She said I was going to have to pay.
Other kids at the same table left no tip, so my tips I did earn throughout the day also went to paying the kitchen staff, then with two non-payments I made no money that day. It sucked. It made me so angry that people would actually do that. Sunday night my manager said that she is going to try to contact one of the kids who she knows that was at that table, and if the person doesn't end up paying she will give me half of my money back. Still sucks that I have to pay anything for someone else skipping on their bill. Ugh!
Wow that stinks! I can't believe people do that.
ReplyDeleteThat really sucks...I can't imagine skipping out on a bill. Unfortunately, I hear it happens frequently in the serving business and it's one of the perils of the job. I don't think it's completely fair that you have to pay for it. I know, when a group of us goes into a restaurant, and we ask for separate bills, I try and be a little more generous with my tip because I know it's a bit more work to separate them all.
ReplyDeleteWhen my mother was working as a cashier in a grocery store (years and years ago now), if she was short on her til for the day, the difference came out of her paycheck. I don't think they do that anymore in the business.
OMG! I can't believe the nerve of those kids. No wonder I would feel discriminated against when I was a teenager in a big group. I didn't know that servers had to pay for people that leave without paying. I hope you get your money back =(
ReplyDeleteIs it legal for your employer to require you to cover the unpaid meal? Or to pay the kitchen staff out of your own tips? I'm shocked that a restaurant is allowed to set up a situation where you might have to PAY THEM for the privilege of working there!
ReplyDeleteYa i never got that whole idea of you having to pay if someone didnt pay. Is that even legal? Why should you PAY to work there? As you said, you're already making less than minimum wage! Its ridiculous if you ask me.

ReplyDeleteHave a look at the Employment Standards Act for Ontario if you work in Ontario (which I think you do)...I don't think the employer can make you pay for the "dine and dash". You're not responsible for the criminal act of the person who ate and ran. Stand up for your rights as an employee!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with above poster, you shouldn't be paying to work there. Look up the employment standards for Ontario and if you must, go to the labour board.
