Ups and Downs

You remember that manager at my restaurant job that I really disliked? He was condescending and rude to employees AND customers. Well last Friday he came into work a little bit before his shift started....DRUNK....and he quit. The boss asked if he was giving his notice and he said no and that was it. So life around there has been slightly better, I still wish I didn't have to work there though.

Teaching work has been picking up just slightly. Yay...never enough though it seems.

I feel poor lately. I don't even have the option of quitting the restaurant if I want to continue having savings every month. Bills add up really fast and there are things that I would like to do that cost a lot of money. I am glad that March is a 3 paycheque month for me. Hopefully that will help.

On Friday I went to my ASL weekend and got lost. It was also the day we got about 15cm of snow. I was in the middle of nowhere trying to figure out where to go and I went to turn left but instead slid straight into a snowbank. I didn't damage my car but I was STUCKKKK!!! Tires spinning. Over an hour away from home, in the dark, on a middle-of-nowhere road. I called my dad. He came which took over an hour and a half with my brother and they were able to get me out. THANK GOODNESS they were around. I am going to buy them dinner and bring it over for them as a thank you.

On the bright side, my ASL weekend was great! It was really nice to be able to practice signing with Deaf and hearing people interested in ASL. I hope to take more courses soon when they are offered in my area.

Tagged and Questions for YOU

I was tagged by Two Degrees! I'd love for you to answer my questions at the bottom too!

1. What does your wallet looked like? Is it organized or cluttered?
It's pretty organized. I used to LOVE my wallet. I still love the colours but I sort of want something smaller. But for now it works just fine.

2. If you had $10 to spend on a date, where would you go?
A date, ah we haven't done that in a long time! I think we would likely just rent a movie, or pick up some treats and watch one we already have.

3. If you had $200 to spend on a date, where would you go?
I would love to go see a hockey game with D. Go Leafs Go!

4. What was the first blog that got you into PF blogging?
Gail Vaz-Oxlade's blog. But from there I found a bunch of others I really enjoyed which inspired me to make my own.

5. What was the last thing you purchased?
I purchased my Ontario College of Teacher's Membership for $138 today.

6. Do you ever pay full-priced for books? Why or why not?
Yes, I generally pay full-price when I do buy books. I don't buy books very often, I'm a huge library goer or I borrow books from friends. But I do buy kids books and the occasional book for myself and I'll buy it new. It's just easier, and I know what I am getting.

7. What is one thing you absolutely refuse to pay for?
Hmmm hard question! I think the one thing I have learned to refuse to pay for is bank fees. For a while there I was paying them until I upped the amount I kept in my account to avoid the fees, and also switched to a no-fee bank! Never again!

8. What do you like to do to relax and unwind?
Pinterest, movies, reading, baking, hanging out with D.

9. If you could resurrect one musician from the dead and watch him/her perform, who would it be?
Michael Jackson. He was a little bit of a strange guy but he could sure dance!!

10. What would your ideal retirement look like?
I would love to actually retire in the town I currently live in. It's sort of a retirement location anyway. It's a beautiful place. Hopefully I would have enough in my retirement funds to not have to worry about money and be able to live happily with the one I love.

11. Are you going to do your taxes by yourself this year?
No, I've never done my own taxes. I really should learn. My dad ends up doing them for me so it's still free. He's just a procrastinator and doesn't finish them as early as I would like him to.

Here are my questions!

1. What is one (or two) thing(s) you want to learn in your lifetime?
2. What are you saving your money for?
3. What is something funny that has happened to you recently?
4. What is your favourite meal to make?
5. Why did you choose the profession you are in?
6. If you were given $5000 and had to spend it on tangible items in the next 24 hours what would you do?
7. What are you currently reading?
8. What was your favourite subject in school, why?
9. What is one thing you hope happens to you in the next 5 years?
10. What is your biggest pet peeve about the opposite sex?
11. Tell me a joke you know.

Recent Happenings

I checked out gyms in my area. So expensive. Contracts and costly just to sign up. There is one more that I don't LOVE the look of but I want to check out the prices of the place sometime this week. Apparently they are going to be offering fitness classes starting this week so it might be worth it!

D had a pond hockey tournament this weekend. Saturday was -27 here with the windchill and being a cheerleader for three games was soooo cold but fun. It was a great weekend!

On Sunday I went to Toronto to visit with my roommate from university. I picked out the bridesmaid dress I am going to be wearing and had a fitting. Weddings are sure expensive!!

I was teaching a grade 11/12 class last week. This one boy in the class was saying a website address to his friend and it went like this, "H-T-T-P-S-eyes of a smiley face...." It sort of shocked me. I asked him if he knew the real term for "eyes of a smiley face" and he did not.

Tomorrow is Valentine's Day. I am teaching in the afternoon and then working the night at the restaurant. It will be a busy night full of couples. D and I don't have any plans. I think I will bake him some cookies and make him a card in the morning before work so he can have it when he gets back from work since I won't be there.

Hope you have a lovely Valentine's Day tomorrow!!!

Tag! YOU are it!

It seems that Tales of a Blended Family tagged me in a meme the other day.  I always enjoy these things.
Here are the rules…
#1 – Post these rules.
#2 – Answer the 11 questions from the person who tagged you.
#3 – Create 11 new questions for the people you tag.
#4 – Tag 11 people and link them to your post.
#5 – Let them know that you tagged them

1. If you could have 3 people over for a dinner party, who would they be (and a short why)?
I would have my mom because she is awesome, my grandpa because I would like to have one more conversation with him, and Ryan Reynolds for some eye candy.
2. Who is your favourite author and why?
I honestly have no idea. I have a ton of favourite books. I might say Sophie Kinsella just because I've read a lot of her books, most other authors I have only read a couple of books written by them.
3. What activities/clubs did you join in High School and what was your favourite
I joined the Outdoors club. I can't think of any others. I worked throughout high school so was not into many extracurricular activities. I enjoyed that club though. Looking back now I wish I had played some more sports.
4. Is there a movie that you can watch over and over again and never get sick of it?  Why?
I can watch chick flicks multiple times. I like Father of the Bride, The Proposal, You've Got Mail.
5.  Do you have any hobbies?  Tell us about them.
I like baking, sewing, reading, surfing the internet, watching movies.
6.  Is there someone from your past that you have lost touch with but would like to have them back in your life…who is it and why?
Some high school friends. We drifted apart when I went away to school. It would be nice to be closer with them but it's difficult now that we haven't spoken in a while.
7.  Tell us about your guilty pleasure
I have a sweet tooth. I like to eat chocolate and sometimes do so a little extensively. I also love trash reality TV shows....teen mom anyone?? Good thing we don't have cable anymore.
8.  Do you watch tv?  What are your 3 favourite shows (and if you don’t watch tv, tells us why you don’t)
I hardly watch TV just because we don't have cable. I stream what I can though. I LOVE Dexter, Switched at Birth, and The Big Bang Theory.
9.  What did you want to be when you grew up?
It changed quite a bit. I wanted to be a magician or a ventriloquist when I was little just because I saw one and it was cool. Then I got a little older and wanted to be a teacher or an accountant.
10. Why did you start blogging?
Gail Vaz-Oxlade got me into it from reading her daily blog. I also wanted to track my progress and get out of debt soon and it was a great way to stay accountable.
11. Who do you most admire in your life? Tell us something about that person.
The person I admire the most in my life is my mom. I hope to one day become a mom and she is just always there and supportive. She is funny and caring and awesome!

Now my 11 questions, if YOU read any of this post then I would love for you to answer my questions too! Either in comments or on your blog. I LOVE reading answers to things like these.

3. What is something funny that has happened to you recently?
4. What is your favourite meal to make?

Living Room Set? Or more into savings?

Remember how I was talking about how I had some furniture lust? There is this particular set of living room furniture that I have had my eye on. I really like it. It's bonded leather which makes it cheaper, it's comfy, well made, and modern. D thinks it looks like office furniture but what does he know.

I noticed this set online several weeks ago. This past week it came on sale!! From $1200 for the set to $800, plus an ottoman. The set is a loveseat, couch, and chair.

Now this is a total WANT not a NEED at all. And $800 plus tax would bring me a little over $900. We have furniture. It's ugly though.

D thinks I should save my money to go on a vacation or something else, but I already have a vacation fund. He also thinks that we might move far away someday and it wouldn't be worth taking furniture with us so it would be a waste to buy it now and have to store it. I really want it but don't need it at all. I think it would just make me happier sitting on matching furniture. What do you think. Is D right? Should I just save my money or buy the set?
