Totaled My Car :(

Sunday I went to a bridal shower in Toronto. It was a lot of fun, the bridesmaids sang a song and played some games. Had a nice meal and I got to catch up with some friends I don't get to see often enough.

After the shower the bridesmaids were all travelling to pick up our dresses. We were all following the bride since we didn't know where we were going. The bride raced through a yellow light and the truck in front of me stopped at the red. I pushed the brakes to slow at the red and just plowed right into the truck.

My airbag went off, my car filled with smoke and I quickly turned off into the first empty parking space. The truck driver was my roommate from university. She pulls over and runs over to see how I am. I had hurt my arm but nothing serious. She was completely fine. She said she barely moved, THANK GOODNESS she was okay. I will try to upload a picture of my car because it was smashed right in. Her truck in perfect condition. She had an "illegal hitch" which saved the bumper from getting any damage. Thankfully.

The bride calls us and finally I answer and she comes by with the two other bridesmaids that were her passengers. She calls for help and eventually the police and a tow truck come.

I had to sit in my car the entire time since my emergency brake and the parking break both were not working and I would roll toward the road everytime I let go of the brake pedal. The hooked it up, took our statements and issued me a ticket for careless driving.

It's 6 points and $490. However if when I request a court date to fight the ticket, which the police officer recommended doing, as did the tow truck driver and my insurance company, that if the truck driver does not show for the court date the charges will be dropped. She has told me that she won't show, it's a 3 hour drive for her and she does not want to see me have to face the charges.

My car is now at an impound. I am going to miss that thing :( I have a rental covered my insurance for now. Ugh, I needed a new car but wanted to have time to shop around. This is no fun.

Through this whole ordeal though I learned that I have the best friends and family. They are so patient and forgiving. So nice and willing to help, give me a place to stay and offer a car to drive.

  2. wow! that's not quite the memories you all were hoping to create on such a happy day. Those points and the fine, as well as the ticket and the insurance are like being hit all over again.
All those numbers really add up.

I am glad you are ok and have such great supports. Hugs

  3. le bummer.
I just had to deal with a car write off and it was an aggravating process. I wish you luck!

  4. Unless the tow truck driver was a witness to the whole incident, don't count on the charges being dropped just because he doesn't show. If he's not a witness, he's got nothing to do with the accident except that he arrived on scene to pick up the car.

  5. Blow the expense side of this accident, you came out unhurt that's all that matters...

  6. That really sucks. I'm glad to hear you're ok though!

  7. So glad you're okay!!! I know the buying-a-new-car process will be stressful, but imagine how much worse it would be with a broken arm/leg!

  8. OMG... I am so glad you are not hurt! If your arm hurts I would go and get it checked. Better safe than sorry. Definitely show up to court to contest it and hopefully they will write it off or I'm sure they will reduce the fine.

  10. I'm so sorry to hear about your car accident! But, I'm glad you are ok and no one was hurt. As concerns your ticket for careless driving, I think you should fight it. You have to find an experienced and professional lawyer who could help you fight this ticket. I hope everything will go well! Good luck!

  11. How unfortunate, that's a total wreck. I'd be feeling blue if my blue car ended up like that in the picture. :( I'm sorry about what happened to your arm. Good thing none of you had a serious injury. I suggest you ask for the exact location next time and Google it. Following a car can sometimes be dangerous, because each driver has his/her own pace and level of determination.

    1. Stelle's right. In addition, every driver drives at his/her own speed. It’s certainly quite a feat to know how fast a person drives. Anyway, perhaps you should just exercise more caution the next time you have to tail someone’s car. Or perhaps, you can agree that the person leading should slow down a bit so all of you can follow safely.

    2. I agree with Stelle. Tailgating can be very dangerous, especially if you're too close and driving at the same speeds. You won’t be able to react quickly enough to step on the brakes when the car in front of you breaks hard due to traffic. You just need to be extra careful next time!

    3. Using Google Maps is totally a huge advantage for the driver. Not only would you be able to reroute in case of a traffic jam, you could also plot shortcut routes for you to reach your destination faster. Have a safe drive, my friend!

  12. This is such an unfortunate event. Your experience proved that every time we drive, our safety is also dependent on how others would drive. No matter how careful we are, we can’t avoid some reckless drivers along the way. By the way, you better get your airbags checked. It is hard to drive when your car’s safety features are not working well.

  13. Aww! That’s totally a sad, fateful story! I agree with Maria. Car airbags play a very vital role in protecting the passengers in case of accidents. I’m glad nobody’s badly hurt. How are you doing now?

  14. Your car looks awful! What happened? Did the break stop working or was the road slippery? Anyway, it’s a good thing no one was injured. Remember that accidents can happen anytime, so you should always check your car’s gauges and do regular maintenance so that we can prevent being hassled by different, and possibly frustrating, mechanical problems.

    1. I have to agree with what Caron had to say. Accidents are inevitable, but can be prevented. Check your car before and after leaving the garage, my friend - that's one way to avoid car accidents.

  15. That's horrible, my friend. I'm sorry about what happened to your car. I hope your insurance company gave you a hand with the repairs. :( Be extra careful next time. As much as possible, slow down. Obey the speed limit even if other cars are going over it. :)

    1. Nita's right. There's nothing wrong being a responsible citizen, you know. Especially in school zones, remember, the speed limit in school zones is 20 mph. If a school bus stops to pick up or drop off students, the driver should stop at least 10 feet from the front or rear of the bus just to assure their safety. :)

  17. That's too bad. I've had 3 of my cars wrecked due to no fault of my own. Very unpredictable. Sorry to see.

  18. oh so sad but its reality if we checked when take out our car from garage or going to in garage then we can prevent such condition
