Books, Movies, Spending, and Weekend Recap

On the weekend D and I went skating. I am one of the few Canadians that cannot skate. D has skated for as long as he has been able to walk. He played hockey. So we went on Saturday and he helped me out. I did not let go of him the entire time. On Sunday we went again and only held one hand. I actually made it around the rink once all by myself. Yep I'm 25 and there are 3 year olds at the public skate that were wayyyy better! It was so much fun though, I only fell 3 times, and he caught me everytime :) Thankfully!!! We got a 10 pass which ended up being $38 and we split it.

Saturday I also got my snowtires put on. It came to $90!!! I wish I knew how to change a tire. Apparently it's way easier if you have rims so maybe I will invest in those for my next car.

Monday and today I worked. Woohoo. I got gas after work today and also had to go to the dentist. Cha-ching! $32 to fill my car up...holy gas is high right now. It was $180 at the dentist. Just a cleaning, no x-rays. Sheesh!

D and I also made a supper last night and I bought the sides. Things to make a spinach salad, and broccoli. It was a good meal. He made game sausages, and I made the salad with a hard boiled egg, cucumber, red peppers, and this greek and feta dressing. I also steamed the broccoli. Delicious! We made jalepeno poppers at the same time but were too full to eat them by the time they were ready.

We watched The Hurt Locker last night. It was good. Opens your eyes to the war in the middle east. It was hard to watch some parts but overall a very well done movie. Tonight we are either going to watch Get Him to the Greek, or Slumdog Millionaire.

I also finished The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I really liked it. It took about 200 pages to get into it, but it was a good read and I am looking forward to reading the next one. Has anyone seen the movie? I have started to read Survivor by Chuck Palahniuk. It's strange so far. He is also the author of Choke and Fight Club. Has anyone read any of his books? I think it's a weird book but I really like it as well.

  2. The skating sounds like fun! I haven't skated in ages, it's something I should get back into. Almost no one in my area does anymore :-(

I have seen The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and really enjoyed it :-) I might get the 2nd one this weekend, it's on PPV and I finished the book a couple weeks ago. I would recommend the movie for sure if you liked the book so much :-)

i am curious what kind of car you have if filling up costs $32 and you think thats a lot? lol. I have a yaris which is like one of the smallest cars out there and it usually costs about $39 to fill up. Just wondering!

  5. That dinner sounds delicious! And affordable!

I LOVE The Hurt Locker, it was one of my favorite movies. Do you have dental insurance? I desperately need to go to the dentist but I'm scared I will have to pay TONS of money to fill cavities.

  6. hk, I have a Toyota too. It's a Tercel. My roommate has a Yaris too, she loves it! It is on my short list of potential "next cars." I like small ones that are good on gas.

FB I think I will read the next two in the trilogy. I even read online that he could have written a total of 5 in the series (some not complete), but his family and partner have the transcripts. Maybe they will eventually be published too.

erika, I do not have dental insurance. Blahh, I think I'm going to postpone my next appointment to at least 9 months instead of the recommended 6. Going twice a year every year is just too expensive without benefits!!

Maureen and Saving4Later you should try skating again! It was a lot of fun even though I was by far the worst on the ice (and close to one of the oldest).

  7. I really like Chuck Palahniuk, but he definitely a certain type of taste. If you like a great allegory than he's your man. Kurt Vonnegut is great too. Some things of Palahniuk's are a bit hard to read though, like Haunted, quite disturbing.

Just found your blog, I am enjoying it.

  9. I've read Chuck Palahniuk's Fight Club but only because I love the movie. I must admit though... I couldn't get into the book as much as the movie. The book was just so... incoherent. I realize it's to reflect the mind of the character. But still... it was very confusing.

I hear Choke the book is better (but the movie wasn't great)

  10. Chuck Palahniuk's books are definitely for certain types of people. I personally love them, but they intentionally put you outside of your comfort zone. You'll either really enjoy them or wish you'd never picked them up. I read Choke and then read every other book he had written (at that time, 2004) within the next month. I couldn't put him down. But they are definitely not for everyone.
