Favourite Book

I am looking for suggestions of books to read for 2010. Any ideas??

I'm currently reading "Twenties Girl" by Sophie Kinsella (the Shopaholic writer). So far I'm a bit over half done, and I have to say it's not my type but I will still finish it. I LOVED "Can You Keep a Secret?" and "The Undomestic Goddess." This book is about a girl who is visited by a ghost that wants her necklace back, I'm not so into the paranormal thing.

The next book I think I want to read is "The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold. I have heard good things about this book and they are even going to be making it into a movie soon.

I am really into chicklits, not so much fantasy books. What are your favourite types of books? Do you have a favourite book(s)?

  1. Wow. I have a lot of favorite books. Some of them are the whole Twilight Saga, The Host by Stephanie Meyer, Thousand Splendid Suns, The Kite Runner and the Sookie Stackhouse series (Dead until Dark is the first one). Also you might like this series, it's about a female bounty hunter but she isn't butchy, she's like the girls in Sophie Kinsella's books. The first book is called One For The Money by Janet Evanovich. Happy reading!

  3. I haven't read the Twilight series yet (I know, where have I been?) I want to read The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns. My mom read The Kite Runner and said she liked it. I have heard of the Janet Evanovich series (with all the numbers in the titles) I will look into those and the other ones you and Jessie mentioned. Thanks!

  4. I really liked Twenties Girl for the most part. Mostly for the ending.

    Other good chicklit:

Marian Keyes - The Other Side of the Story (the other ones are just "okay")

    Devil Wears Prada (of course)

Emily Giffin's series -- very light chicklit

Twilight is good but the writing can be juvenile and make you huff involuntarily at times.

That's about all I can think of at the moment.

  5. FB, I'm getting more into it the more I read. I have some predictions. That Lara will end up with Ed, and that Sadie will get the necklace back and give it to Lara. Lara will start her own headhunting company and Natalie will go bankrupt. Uncle Bill's documentary will show the type of man he really is.

Thanks for the other suggestions :)

  6. I liked The Birth of Venus (historical fiction).

As for nonfiction, I really like Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking.

Chick-lit - Bitter Is The New Black. Also loved Undomestic Goddess.

  7. The other boleyn girl is delightfully trashy historical chick lit. The movie was awful, but I never wanted the book to end. It was also about a million pages, so it will keep you busy for awhile!

  8. I don't do Chick-lit really. Don't feel too bad about not reading the Twilight Series. I tried, I went into Chapters and read the first couple of chapters of the first book and it was the most excrutiating experience of my life, lol. So I put it down, never to pick it up again.

I read Wicked and Son of a Witch by Gregory Macguire this year. It was interesting, and his style is quite different. I have also started reading Margaret Atwood. I loved The Handmaid's Tale in my first year university english course. I read the Robber Bride and I have Oryx and Crake on my to read list.

  9. I love love LOVE Sophie Kinsella! I also enjoy Shelia O'Flanagan.

    Try Jodi Picoult, she's good.

I also love Joy Fielding. Not Chicklit, but she's still great!

  10. I love reading chick-lit. An author that I enjoy that hasn't been mentioned yet is Meg Cabot. Some of her popular chick-lit series include "Queen of Babble" and "The Boy Series". You can probably read through them pretty quickly, but they're enjoyable.

  13. I'm late to comment but I just read a great book called THE HELP by Kathryn Stockett (I think thats her name, I dont have the book right here). It's the best book I read in 2009! I'm encouraging everyone to read it.
