Have You Ever Bought Something Refurbished??

I've wanted a Kitchenaid stand mixer for a while now. I have looked into all the different models and attachments etc. I've really done my research. I decided to check kijiji this week. There were several people in my area who were selling kitchenaid mixers. Some were brand new!

I'm torn between two models. One is a better mixer but is a new refurbished model. It would be better for mixing dough which I really want to do. The other is $20 more and new. I've e-mailed both and so will just wait to hear back from them before making a decision.

I used to think that refurbished meant it was broken, sent back to the company and then fixed to be resold. However I learned with some research that that is not necessary true. Sometimes things that are sent back to the warehouse and then classified as refurbished could be because there was overstock at a retail store, the item was discontinued, or returned by a customer. They will have been reconditioned and re-tested before being sold as "refurbished."

My question to you is have you ever bought a refurbished model? Did you ever have any difficulties with it?

  1. I've bought 2 ipods from apple refurbished and they looked brand new when I got them. That plus they worked like new, one was bought 3 years ago, the other 2 and the both get used all of the time and they're both still working. Based on this positive experience I would likely buy refurbished again.

  2. My sister got an iPod shuffle a few years ago and it too came as if it was brand new... no problems whatsoever with it.

Th Kitchenaid site has some mixers that are reboxed... which I take to mean refurbished. They are quite a bit less, $250 for the regular model, $300 for the pro. Shipping's only $15 which I find a great deal for a model like that.

How much are they charging on Kijiji? (curious!)

  4. One lady is charging $200 for an Artisan, and a man is charging $180 for a costco model, the 5qt, 475W, spiral dough hook KG25 model with pouring shield. The only thing that is turning me off of the second option is that I think it's the burnished accessories (not dishwasher safe), and that it's a narrow bowl (harder to add ingredients??). Any thoughts on those?

  6. I checked our local kijiji and there's 1 Artisan for $200... that sounds like a pretty good price to me! Let us know if you go for it :-)

  8. Well, a word of caution against refurbished. My friend bought an iPod Touch refurbished from Apple only to have it not work in a month. Apple was nice enough to give her a refund. Another friend got a Blackberry from AT&T refurbished and it stopped working in 4 months - no refund!
