Christmas Gift Card Decisions

One of the things BF got me for Christmas was a gift card to Futureshop. It's $100. I looked on the site last night and decided I most likely want to spend this money on a GPS. Since I travel a lot with work, and I also have a tendency to get lost. I found two that I liked that were pretty much identical, one a Tomtom and one a Garmin. Does anyone have any experience with either of these?

Currently the Tomtom is $179.99 after $100 discount. The Garmin is $199.99 after $20 discount. I think I might even wait a little longer to buy one, see if there are newer models that come out soon. I am in no rush, and not entirely sure that this is what I want to spend the gift card on.

My brother got an iTouch last night and was showing me some of the applications and it is very cool. I want one of those too. They have an ASL app called iSign and you can type in any word and it will show you the sign for it. Actions and all, it's quite amazing for the size of it. So he also got me thinking about that....hmmm GPS or iTouch. I don't really NEED either!

  1. I'd go for the GPS.

I wrote a whole thing on the Garmin nuvi 265W which I LOVE.

  3. I'd go iTouch, but that is because I would NEVER use a GPS. =)

I have this theory that GPS(s) make people dependent on them like a crutch. Like they can't get from their house to the store without their GPS. Well what happens when you loose it? Perhaps I'm using this as an excuse to not spend the money on it?

  4. iPhones have GPS built in - does the iPod touch have that too? Maybe something to look into.

I would probably go for the iPod touch because it offers a lot more functionality. You can put so many apps on it. There might even be a GPS app? A GPS would just be a GPS.

Maybe think about how often you travel and have found yourself thinking that a GPS would help you do things that google maps or regular maps can't do.

  8. I would check to see how much the updates cost on each. Sometimes the cost almost as much as a new one

  10. Great comments and thank you. I'm still on the fence. I think as of right now I'm leaning toward a GPS because it is more practical. The iTouch doesn't have a GPS unless you can get the internet as you are driving which is hard since it's wifi (that's what my brother told me at least). But I really like some of the apps on the iTouch. I think I'll decide in a couple of weeks.

  11. No complaints here with our TomTom! However, I think that if you hold out a bit longer you could probably get it a bit cheaper. We bought ours at Future Shop too last year and we paid $159 on sale. Good luck with your decision!
